This week, the hot topic has to be pilot training. On Wednesday and Thursday, AOPA-China hosted the Fourth Seminar of Ab Initio Flight Training in Beijing. Regulators from CAAC, representatives from airlines, principals of Part 141 flight academies at home and abroad were gathered, face to face, to discuss the newest policies on flight training, as well as to share their experience of pilot cultivation.

I am glad I was on site to have a taste of the status quo of pilot training in China and meet a lot of aviation fanatics who are both managers and pilots.

Let’s listen to the on-the-spot interviews:

Mo Rolf: “The most vital element, the most vital thing that any flight training experience can transfer to the students is the right attitude.”

The interviewee is Mo Rolf, the CFO of General Chennault Flying Tiger Academy. He is also a pilot who served in US military. However, there is a different voice from Gaetan, another pilot who is also the Vice President of Cargaire which is a Part 141 Flight Academy in Canada.

Gaetan Dureau:“The first and what I value the most is English. If a student wants to go to foreign flight school, it doesn’t matter whether you go to France, Australia, the United States or Canada, the NO.1 issue is English. The instructor in these foreign schools does not speak Chinese, therefore how can you instruct someone to become a good pilot if someone doesn’t understand English. The second one is your attitude. You decide what you like, you decide what you do. This is based on your attitude. Every student would love to fly, but many students think they are pilot before they are pilot. They are only students, they are not pilot yet. It’s their attitude to be able to say I need to learn to become a good pilot.”

However, Jerry thinks differently.

In the seminar many speakers talked about many factors that may affect flight training such as technology, flight instructor, management, SMS, pilot’s own aptitude and attitude, which one do you think is the most important?

Jerry:” All. They are all very important. Because flight training is not about one thing. It’s many that come together to provide the quality of training to young pilots. So you must have good management to manage your training organization to provide the service to pilot training. And the flight training is monitored by individuals’ attitude. If you have a good attitude, you are already a winner. And aptitude because flying is basically a psychomotor skill.”

Well you may wonder who is Jerry?

Jerry:I started flying in 1969. I do enjoy flying and now I do enjoy teaching young people. I used to be a flight instructor and flight examiner, and now I am the General Manager of STAA.

So the three interviewees are pilots, although they have prioritized different elements in flight training, all of them attached importance to pilots’ attitude in flight training.

The seminar did end, but flight training will go on and on because

“Soul of the Aircraft is pilot”. So what we are looking for are those souls of Aircraft. How do we get them to the point they are able to fly aircraft and the answer is of course the training.”

The interviews are just beginning, if you want to know more information of the seminar, please follow us on WeChat, Facebook, Twitter and ximalaya. Feel free to send us comments on this topic and any other topics of our previous episodes.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival. Until next Friday. Bye.
